The Rideau Canal Skateway is located in Ottawa, Ontario. Ottawa is the capital of Canada. The Skateway is the largest skating rink in the world, it is 7.8 kilometers long and runs through downtown Ottawa. Depending on the weather the Rideau Canal freezes in late December or January and usually stays frozen until late February or March.
Workers work long hours to prepare the skateway. Holes are drilled through the ice and a pump is inserted to spray the water over the ice. The cold air then freezes the water creating a smooth skating surface. This is done throughout the length of the canal. The Rideau Canal Skateway is a very popular tourist attraction and it's free to skate on.
